Did you read the content warning? Yes? What a good girl.
small pigeon sits on the windowsill, its beautiful silver feathers barely visible in the shadows.
“Good morning, Herb. How’s the missus?” I ask, reaching out to scratch the deep green feathers on his crop. The bird coos in reply, and my lips tip in a smile.
Herb has been tapping at my window for the past few months I’ve been living here, and occasionally, a smaller white pigeon will accompany him on his visits.
It doesn’t look like he’s brought her today, which is fine because I’m a...

watching Herb finish his breakfast. It can’t be all bad to be a pigeon, I suppose. Especially if you’re a pigeon whose name is Herb.
“Do you ever get lonely, Herb? Probably not. But I doubt you think about those things. I guess that’s another bonus to being a pigeon…”
“Sorry, buddy. I’m all out,” I say, shaking the empty bag for good measure. He pins me with those beady little eyes, fluffs himself, then takes to the sky.
“Time of death…01:38.”
Thank fuck, at least it’s over. Thirty four years was too many.
Hospital. Hurt. Not dead.
Death is a warm blanket. Soothing nothingness. To fall. To slip. Down, down, down the rabbit hole.
The mask. Where is it? Where, where, where? They’ll see you, and they’ll vomit. They’ll run, they’ll scream, scream, scream. Kill. Kill them all before they see.
I was wrong earlier. She’s not pretty; she’s striking. High cheekbones, a button nose arcing perfectly up to her brow, and thick, dark lashes framing a pair of the most dazzling green eyes I’ve ever seen.
“Your pressure looks good…miraculously.”
Sweet, innocent little thing. How did she survive so long in this city? You want to know and play with the little light behind those haunting, beautiful eyes. Would love to wrap your fingers around that throat and squeeze, squeeze, squeeze.
I’m not going to hurt you. I wouldn’t. Not something so beautiful, so precious. So, so breakable.
I search her face, and with a jolt, I realize this isn’t the first time I’ve seen this girl. I don’t know why it took me so long to recognize her. The raven hair, the haunting eyes, the impossible innocence plastered across her face. It’s been years, but I’d recognize her anywhere.
Lillith Harper. As soon as the epiphany strikes, everything goes dark.
“Bear! He’s waking up!” “Fucking hell, Axel, I can see that!”
“Axel” and Wes “Bear,” arguing like an old married couple.
“Well, excuse me for trying to be helpful,” Landon whines.
“You know what would help? Shutting the fuck up,” Wes snaps, eve...

I find the strength to crack my eye open, but Landon bounds over to my bedside before I say a word. Clearly forgetting I was just fucking shot, he grabs me by the shoulders and gives me a shake.
“Landon…get off,” I growl. His light blue eyes are filled with so much relief, it’s the only thing stopping me from hitting him with what little strength I have left.
“Sorry, Kain,” Landon murmurs, hanging his head a...

I grimace from the sharp pain as I pick it up, expertly fitting it across the right half of my face. “You do realize I was just shot, right?” I turn to glare at Wes, feeling more like myself now that my face is back. “Wanna take it easy?”
“I had to leave my date when word got to the club about what happened to you. She was fucking hot, so excuse me for being a little pissed off.”
“You were worried about me.” The seven-foot giant glares and crosses his burly arms over his chest.
“Of course I was worried! What you did was
vial filled with a light purple powder. A spark lights my hollow chest as I palm the gift, twisting the thin plastic tube between my fingertips. I yank the cap off with my teeth and pour out a thin line on the back of my hand before snorting the crystalline powder in one swift breath.
Instantly, a warm buzz flows through my veins, dulling the pain in my chest while clearing my fog in a way only a powerful stimulant like Rebound can.
Take her. Take her. Take her.
“Uh, no…” I mutter, confused by the question. “Was I supposed to?” “Oh, dear, no!”
“I’ll see you later, Lilly!” “Yeah… see you later.”
“Not just that! Bear told me they took you to the hospital! Do you even realize how stupid that was?”
It was kind of hard for me to resist while my lungs were filling with blood, but there’s no point in explaining it to him.
“Why did you have to do it, Kain? Just tell me that, and I’ll drop it. I just need to know why.”
“Fine. I’ll lay low. For the club.”
“You’re going to give me a stroke one of these days, you know that?”
“Too bad you need me,” I say, giving him a careless shrug for good measure.
“Looks like someone’s got a bigger head than before. I didn’t really think that was possible.” I shoot a glare that has him cowering as I slowly stand from my chair.
“Humor really isn’t your forte, John.” “I have a roomful of guys out there who would love to disagree with you,”
“You’re becoming less like yourself by the day. Sometimes I’m not sure if I’m talking to Kain or my best friend.”
