“You’re so damn beautiful,” he whispered in my ear as he continued. “I can’t believe you’re mine.”
“I never thought I’d have to deal with a crazy ex-girlfriend from hell.” I shook my head and reached for the paper towel. “You must really be insecure to come all the way to another world to try to intimidate me.”
I know you wanted to keep your secrets, but this is something you definitely should have told me! Oh, by the way, I have a psycho ex that might try to take your head off with her fucking tentacles!”
“So, you were sitting in hell knowing that I’m your soulmate and waiting for me to die?” I went from creeped out to irritated. Here I was, trying to find my love on Earth, and the man who was meant for me was ignoring my existence. “When you say it like that, it sounds really bad.” He chuckled. “Because it is really fucking bad.” I threw a pillow at him. “There’s nothing funny about it.”
“Son of a bitch.” Keri pressed her hand against her forehead. “Demons are real. I’m too drunk for this shit.”
“I am so much more than my attachment to some man,” Olian screamed as her eyes darkened to a fiery orange. “And yet, here you are, stalking me because of an attachment to some man.” I pointed out the irony in her statement.
Keri whipped the car across two lanes and pulled onto the interstate, because that’s what you do when a monster is chasing you—you get on the expressway!
With Rayna, her heartbeat was my beacon, calling me to her,
“You human women are insane.” I laughed. “We sure are. The men made us that way.” Keri relaxed finally.
It was naïve to think I could protect you from any of this. I won’t do that anymore. This is my promise to you. I will support you in this journey and protect you from my enemies. Whatever life you want to lead, I’ll be there to guard your dreams and soothe your heart. You deserve that and so much more.”
It was strange to me how much I enjoyed caring for her. She’d given me nothing but trouble, but all I wanted was to make sure she was okay. I looked forward to detangling her hair and washing her skin. The thought of bringing her any form of peace made my chest warm with something unfamiliar to me.
Was that why he chose this dress? He wanted me to look pretty for our wedding.
“Now you want me to be the doting husband?” He laughed even harder. “I’m sorry, but that was funny. You should have seen yourself!”
“You’re mine, and I want to take my time with what’s mine. I want to savor you, learn you, be everything you need me to be. Please, let me take my time with you.”
I closed my eyes and tried to visualize a library like Metice said, but all I got was a bookstore full of smut. How was I supposed to do this?
“Seriously?” I scoffed. “You know, mentioning a volcano right now was a terrible idea. If it happens, it’s your fault for putting it in my mind.”
“Rayna, I’ve waited so long for you. I tried to deny it when I first felt you. I did everything I could to protect you from my world, and it feels selfish now to want to keep you in it with me. The thought of you leaving, of not having these moments with you…it kills me.”
“Sometimes, I really wonder if you like the rest of our friend group.” “Of course I do!” She waggled her brows. “I just know how they are, and I love to rub shit in their faces. It brings me joy.”
“Was he supposed to let you die?” Likosa laughed. “That man has loved you long before he ever saw you. There was no way he was going to let that happen. Besides, it only weakens him temporarily. The longer your bond is in place, the stronger you both will become. Bright side is that your human life will last longer because of your connection to him.”
I smiled at the thought of having someone who would go to war for me. For too long, I’d been sitting across poorly lit tables from men who probably wouldn’t defend me against a fly. Now, there was one in my life who literally faced demons from hell to save me. Call me a stereotype, but that shit was sexy.
“Please, don’t do it.” I held my hand up, the laughter already threatening to erupt. “Don’t say if you can’t have him, no one can. Are you really that lame? I really thought, with all your green badassery, you’d have a better line than that!”
I felt her heartache, and for a quick second, I felt bad for her. If she at any point felt what I did for Metice, I understood why she wanted to preserve that. Still, the bitch was out of her mind.
“That’s it? No celebratory twerking?” He peered over my shoulder at my ass. “Not even a little bounce for my good deed?” “I see. That’s why you did this?” I slapped him on the shoulder. “And what do you think twerking will lead to?”
