I had fallen in love with Whitford Hayes. I loved him with my whole heart, despite my head telling me to have better sense. But I loved him in a way that meant forever. I hadn’t known for sure until this moment, as I stared into his face, which was somehow vulnerable and remote all at once.
“Are you sure?” “I’ve never been more sure of anything in my entire life.” “Let’s get married, then,” I said, breathless.
hadn’t noticed he’d been that agitated while he waited for my answer. A thrilling feeling thrummed under my skin, making my heart pulse. I’d made Whitford Hayes nervous.
“Proposing to you was my choice and no one else’s,” he said. “In the utter chaos of my life, you are the only thing that makes sense. You asked me what my reasons are, and I don’t know all of them yet, but I do know one important thing.” He took a shaky breath, his eyes never leaving my face, and the raw emotion lurking in their depths almost keeled me over. “You’re the one I want, Inez.”
“Stop thinking about everything you want to ask him,” Whit said. “You’ll have time to ask your questions after the ceremony.” “How on earth did you know what I was thinking?” “Because I know you.”
I remembered everything I loved about him. He made me laugh, and he was loyal. He would honor his promise to me. I was sure of it. I’d made the right decision. We were married. Married.
Ricardo appeared horrified. “Is this a teacup?” “It is,” Lorena confirmed. “Isn’t it beautiful? I think the blue pattern is divine. Don’t you agree?” “Er,” Ricardo said, eyeing the porcelain cup as if it were a venomous spider. “I won’t be invited to a tea in here, Lorena. What the devil do you expect me to do with this?”
“So if I don’t answer your call, you can call again and again and again, flooding our room with water?” Ricardo asked in an aghast tone. “You’re welcome,” Lorena said, grinning.
How do you like being followed, asshole?
Inez had that gleam in her eye that struck terror in my soul.
