“You care for this girl,” my brother said in a marveling tone. “Your wife.”
“If I did,” I said, “I wouldn’t have married her.”
The slap turned his face, the sound ringing in my ear. Irritated skin turned red from my hand’s imprint.

It was incredible how life could pivot so sharply. How someone you thought you knew could turn into a stranger in the space of a breath.
