Lo stares at him for a long moment. “God, you’re such a Hufflepuff.”
“This house loves when we kiss, love.”
“Don’t even think about my daughter. Think about the freezing pool I’m going to drown you in. It’s right outside.”
“I didn’t always bet on the Hales either. Most of the time in security, I was rooting for the Cobalts.”
“I was afraid of the unsure thing because I didn’t want to lose, but there’s never been a moment where I haven’t believed in you, Luna.”
fucking car. So I slip my phone in my pocket. “You ready, space babe? Your universe awaits.” “Ours,” she corrects, opening the door. Our universe. My ruptured heart feels full.
Goal: keep your girlfriend happy.
“When I’m with Donnelly, I’m no longer scared. I’m not afraid of the world. I’m not afraid of the past. Of any darkness. All the fears I have about myself are gone because I’m my most beautiful self in his eyes, and he sees her before even I do.”
“I’ve loved your mom at her weakest, at her strongest, at her most broken. And she’s loved me at mine. There’s never been a day where I haven’t loved her.”
“I never want you to stop protecting me.” His eyes shoot up to mine. “You’re my dad, and I don’t want that to change with time.”
One girl to love over and over and over again.
“Do you think we’ll ever reach a place where we’re not standing on our tiptoes, waiting to sprint?” He starts to smile, which surprises me. “What do you have against sprinting?” I shrug. “I’m not that fast.” “I’ll carry you.” “I’ll weigh you down.” “You’re air in my arms.”
“That’s the thing about the rug. You stop caring if it gets pulled when you figure out how to land on your feet when it does.”
“You’re by far the strongest person I’ve ever known. Maybe stronger than Moffy. It makes me feel like I can be too.”
“Could be, maybe, but I wouldn’t know because your sister gave me glitter in a tiny glass bottle and labeled it luck in a jar. She’s cute and crafty.”
Does a fairy die when you go on Lily Calloway’s shit list? Am I that fairy?
“Girl, you keep doing this to me,” I say in one breath.
“What?” “Making me fall in love with you.” I’m still choked. Don’t know how I managed to say it at all, but I clear the ball out of my throat. “Don’t stop.” Very softly, she says, “I never will.”
“You fucking fuck,” Ryke growls at the TV.
She smiled wide. “I admit, I like the shrimp smoking on a cigarette a little more.” That one is right next to my Eagles tat. I laughed. “Girl, you already have my heart. Stop trying to steal it again.”
“We didn’t know you were dating the goddamn Hulk.”
Lo leans closer and puts a hand on my shoulder like I’ve seen fathers do to sons in movies. “It’s okay.”
“She doesn’t expect more from you.” His brows furrow. “Why are you expecting so damn much from yourself?”
Her dad squeezes my shoulder. “You’re doing your best. It’s enough.”
Lo cheers, and we’re somehow hugging. I’m screaming so hard my lungs hurt. I can’t believe it.
And Donnelly made you feel like your galaxy is the happiest, most exhilarating place to be. That is love.”
And I realize, they aren’t here for Luna. They came here for me.
“I trust Moffy with my life. With the lives of my brothers and sisters. With the lives of my cousins. If the world were ending, he’s who I’d want at my side…third.”
It’s a pinky promise between a feminine alien and a masculine human—just their hands. One is shaded a vibrant lilac purple, and the other is grayscale. I framed their hands with stars, a comet, and a ringed planet.
“But you make me feel like I don’t have anything to prove at all. I am worthy. I think I just needed to hear that today.”
“I’ve lived to find you,” I breathe. “You are my light side, Luna Hale.”
I twist around and see her running after me. The brightest light in my world is coming towards me.
“It’s been written in the stars,” she says with all the love of every timeline, of the past and present and our future. “And this—it can never be unwritten.”
I’m almost knocked back. How could she know…? “You…?” “I remember.”
I do the only thing that makes sense. I kiss the moon.
“You’re thinking Luna Hale is the most badass of the Fizzle Five.”
My chin quivers. It’s one of the most validating feelings in the world. To be the chosen DNA for their future baby because they love me. Because I am a Hale. Because there should be more Hales thriving in this universe and the next.
“You will never fail her. She will always be with you.”
“You don’t need to be afraid to lose me, Donnelly. I’ll always love all of you exactly as you’ve loved all of me—that’s the secret of our universe.”
“Farrow called me one night…asking where I was. I’d never had someone search for me. Like I…like I was someone worth finding. But I was afraid to be found.”
With her foot up to my ear like a phone and a toothbrush in my mouth, I say, “I wanna marry you.”
“Being my wife is too basic,” I tease with a slow-edging grin. “Too earthly. Needs to be weirder.”
“I’m already yours. It’s like it’s branded inside, and I haven’t needed anything outside. But I want it. One day. Not now. Not tomorrow. I want to get excited about our future together. To finally look beyond and see what waits and never question its existence. And if time is short for us and we die too soon—” “We won’t—”
Because we’re kinda already married on my planet.” I grin. “What’s kinda married?” She laughs tearfully. “I didn’t want to scare you, but we are wedded for all-time, without end.” “When did that happen?” “In the bathtub,” she sniffs, her silent tears still falling. I thumb them away, and she says, “Your intergalactic vows were very beautiful.” My love for her burrows deeper. “So were yours, sad alien.” “Not sad. Very happy.”
“Stability enough to have one.” I let out a breath. “Where I feel like I can touch something that innocent, and I won’t harm it.”
“‘When the world has decayed and all I’ve ever known has disappeared in time you should know the very best of humankind is him,’”
“I don’t ever want to be invisible.” I take his hand. “I always want to be seen with you.”
“Who wouldn’t love a Lunnelly?”
Don’t let anyone dim your light.”
