“You want a beer?” He’s about to flag down the server. “I’m an alcoholic,” Lo states dryly.
I watch O’Malley crouch down to Vanessa. “You scum of the fucking earth—you ever lay a hand on my cousin again, and you’ll find yourself behind bars with your friends. So you better run. You better fucking run until your feet bleed and you never think of coming back.”
“I wanna marry you.” Luna goes wide-eyed. She slows brushing her molars. “That’s…not on the Wawa menu,” she mumbles before spitting in the sink.
“We can take out the sex,” Donnelly mentions. “If that’s the problem—” “That’s not the problem, Paul.” Dad removes his glasses—to pinch his eyes. Because he’s crying. Or at least, he’s trying to restrain the sudden onslaught of tears. He shuts the comic and raises the front of the manuscript to us. The title visible in all its glory. read it four.” Donnelly grins. “Wanna go for five?” He smiles back, no sarcasm attached. “Thank you for sharing your story with me, Donnelly.” “You can call me Paul.” His voice is raspy, choked. He clears it too. “Thanks for helping me love my name again.” It’s not something he’s running from anymore. Dad comes around the desk, and he hugs me first—his love so mighty and resilient. I will go on every voyage with Paul Donnelly. This one, the next one, the last one. It will always, always be known.
I love Pride. It’s every month, every year, never-ending—‘cause there’ll never be a moment I won’t celebrate all kinds of love and my closest friends.
“One more chapter, Mommy, Daddy, please.”
I love him. Paul Donnelly Hale. Married on Earth, we were. But nothing was as momentous as the day Donnelly stared into my eyes and said, “Let’s make a baby.”
“What?” I almost didn’t believe him. “I wanna have a baby with you.” “Now?” “Now.”
Dreams this beautiful can’t really be dreams at all. I know. I believe.
