Villainous characters had epic highs, epic lows, and epic loves. The Emperor loved like an apocalypse.
Is truth stone, or is it water? If enough people walk through a world in their imaginations, a path forms. What’s reality, except something that really affects us? If enough people believe in something, doesn’t it become real?”
“Have you never considered art grants us the impossible? Art opens a door into someone else’s imagination and lets us walk through. Art is the dreamed-of escape. Art lets the dead speak and the living laugh. Art takes you away from pain when no medicine can save you. Art is the first and last word. Art is the final consolation.”
“I was electrified to hear Key say that when distressed, you call on the names of your lovers,” drawled the Cobra. “Jesus and Batman?” Holy sacrilegious misunderstanding. “I do not have a romantic relationship with those individuals!”
Relationships with no mistakes and no obstacles had no bite. Reading them was like consuming soggy salad for every meal and calling that healthy eating.
“Let’s embrace the evil aesthetic like it’s a lover I’m about to poison. I want lips as red as blood, and eyeliner black as my heart.”
“According to the story, you learn how to be real by being loved,” Key answered. “But I think when you become more real, you learn to love someone the right way. I was born wrong. Everything I’ve ever done was wrong. I’ve never known how to be anything someone wanted. If I learn more, I’ll learn to serve her better.”
Memory black as ebony, white as snow, red as blood, and it hadn’t been a story at all but someone ripped apart.
“There’s a saying that goes ‘I could not love thee, dear, so much, did I not love honour more.’ That’s bullshit hero talk. When he’s emperor, he’s going to love someone more than honour. He will love her past reason. He would do anything for her, which means he will commit any sin. He will put out the sun and carve out the heart of the world for love. That’s why I like bad guys. Imagine powerless pining in a tower waiting for a hero to rescue you. Then imagine being the only one who can command the monster. That’s what I loved him for, but – he didn’t choose me. Fate didn’t choose me, either.”
The Cobra’s lip curled. “Who died and made you the boss of me?” Lord Marius seemed intrigued. “I wasn’t aware that was an option. How many people have to die?”

“I love you as a knife loves a throat,” he murmured as the dead overwhelmed her. “I crawled out of hell to fall at your feet.”
