A flutter rippled in my chest that I tried to stifle. I twined my arms around Chrome’s waist and squeezed him. In that moment, he was my anchor that kept me from drifting away in the arms of my emotions.

Chrome cocked an eyebrow, waiting for us to get it together and be serious.
Standing from my seat, I rounded the rectangular table to reach him. Once I stood beside him, his hand found my lower back. Warmth flooded me.
“You’re my equal, so you better,” I challenged, meeting her fierce expression.
I wanted her to be as equally lethal as me. She had the savagery but just needed to tighten up the loose ends in her training. In the event I wasn’t there to help her, I wanted her to be able to handle herself, regardless of the number of enemies.
