Holy Tartarus below. I had never been so fucking excited in all my life.
Never had I witnessed her in such a striking, undisguised manner as she was now. I needed to touch her. I shadowed in front of her and pushed her back against the wall. My bare chest rubbed against her thin T-shirt, and I shuddered, nearly crying out with joy at the feeling of touching her again.
My love was out for blood, and I would give it to her.
“You will not hurt them. I still need them. You hurt them, and I will spend every second of the rest of my life trying to kill you,” I promised through clenched teeth. Mendax stepped toward me with a grin. “What part of that threat was supposed to dissuade me?”
The painted figures of the wall mumbled in shock. At least seven of the white-robed figures started running from across the room, turning the corner and racing up the wall to where I was pinned. Black movement caught my attention in time to see several of the huge, shadowy figures of the painting glide toward us from another section. Several of the others, including most of the more plain-looking ones, began to climb the walls in a grotesque rhythm I’d never seen before. Sweat beaded across my skin as I watched all of the creatures climb to the top of the domed ceiling, where they each gave me

The prince of night’s wings were spread wide in a commanding span of black smoke.
His hands dropped from my wrists to cup my face, the tip of his nose brushing mine. “You are an alluring rose with secret thorns. A droplet of rain fighting to quench and to drown,” he said, looking deranged and enthralled all at the same time. “You are my only care in life.”
“I am nothing more than a soul without residence since you left me, and I refuse to bear a life without you. Should I die, let it be by your hand, so that your touch is what I remember when I haunt every single dwelling you inhabit. Soon enough, you will meet with me again in Tartarus.” His voice softened while his eyes steeled. “Go on, Calypso, make your life better and finish me off. For good this time.” His right dimple popped. “It makes no difference to me if I’m dead or alive when I chase you.”
Nothing could have separated us as we kissed each other in a way only our souls could understand. Flesh and bones tangled as we each fought to touch more. A new battle had begun.
“This cunt is dripping wet, Caly. Am I supposed to believe you don’t need me after feeling this? You’re a liar.”
dragged the other hand down my outer thigh, leaving scratches in his wake. “My filthy, fucking liar.”
He froze and moved his length away from where it touched me. “What if I hurt you, Caly?” his deep voice whispered. “What if I lose control? I don’t want to hurt you.” His words startled me. Malum Mendax did not worry about hurting anyone. Ever. In fact, he enjoyed hurting others. Craved it.
“I will be anything for you. I love you, Calypso, and if I need to fight the Unseelie prince for you, then he should be warned. Every battle we’ve endured prior will be nothing compared to the lengths I am willing to go through to ensure you are happy and safe—with me.” He bent down to press his warm, sun-kissed lips against mine.
Nothing about it felt wrong or shameful. For the first time since my mom and sister died, a bit of warmth spread through my cold insides, blanketing the dark, angry parts of me with the feeling of home.
“Your lips feel like happiness and sunshine,” I muttered. I didn’t want to move for fear I would lose the feeling. “You taste like sadness. Or a rainy day that doesn’t know light should be in the sky,” he whispered against my lips. “Allow me to be your umbrella, Cal. Let me keep the rain from touching you ever again.”
“I would harness that tongue of yours,” I stated as black-blue smoke clouded my feet. “Her reciprocation of my love is unneeded. I would never require her to hold the same attachments as myself because it is an impossible feat. I am possessed with a cruel and bloody love that collapses and suffocates, squeezes and rips until scars and bruises are the only traces left. She is the noose that hangs me, the rope that strangles and chokes at my soul, and no one—not her or anyone—could ever be left as breathless as I am.”
There would be no more lurking in the Seelie castle now, but I didn’t care. It was beyond my abilities to care about anything but her.
“And you are what she needs, huh? That goddess is a serrated wraith of darkness just waiting to be fed. She’s not some dumb embellishment, made to pump out heirs and go dancing with. You don’t even see the darkness inside her. She was made for me and me alone.”
Aurelius’s warm-shit-colored eyes told me he was telling the truth.
“Tell me,” I croaked, “how do you make her laugh? I don’t want her to lose that.” The smoke dissipated from his mouth at my command.
“Be very careful, little hellhound. I haven’t a thread of control left, and I’m contemplating killing you as we speak. If I am unable to have you all to myself, then maybe no one should have you,” he rasped.
“What happened is you infected my soul and placed yourself in an exceedingly dangerous position. The sole person I would ignite the entire world for is tied to the one person I would give an entire world to burn.”
“Pet, if you think I’ve ruined your life, you don’t give me enough credit. Things are just getting started.” Mendax tightened his grip around my throat, squeezing out air as he leaned down to brush my ear with his mouth. “And I promise you, there is no other threat to your life. I will be the only one that kills you.”
“What’s the matter? Afraid they’ll see me do this? You belong to me now. You are my possession.”
Mendax squeezed my face as his mouth hovered barely an inch from mine. His hand trembled slightly, and I got the feeling it was because he was trying not to snap my neck.
He pulled back and turned my face to the side, toward the guards, as he pressed his mouth to my ear. “No one touches my possessions without consequence.”
“You’ve got it all wrong, pet. Hell is in here, where the devil is.” He winked.
“Your life,” he said, leaning back once more, “and death mean more to me than anything. Because of that, I must leave you here.”
He didn’t want me to get hurt in Unseelie, but leaving me behind with Eli and being unable to kill him was making him crack.
“What do you not understand, Calypso? I will lie, cheat, steal, and kill just to be close enough so I can taste the spent breath from your lungs. You are my only soul. Without you, I am merely a hollow cavity of flesh, a ghoul that will haunt and track your every step and gambit. Whether you accept it or not, you and I belong together. No two creatures were ever made more perfectly for one another,” he whispered against my lips while his hands held my face tightly.
