It may have been bred into us through evolution because of its general adaptiveness: We can capitalize on ordered phenomena in ways that we cannot on those that are random.
And to evolve this tendency would only need to confer a slight advantage over not perceiving order in things - and the environment of evolutionary adaptedness would have been far less complex than our modern environment. In moral terms this insight makes it easier to forgive some aspects of superstition, but in practical terms implies that superstition will be hard to combat, requiring endless cognitive vigilance.
