The reason I mention this at best tangential story is that it has always raised in my mind interesting thoughts about the nature of change in religious settings – the tension between a church building’s authority being based around a sense of its unchanging, indomitable sanctity and the need, keenly felt at particular times and in specific cultures, to radically overhaul and renew. This is a particular problem for Catholicism, which invests so heavily in images, while at the other end of the spectrum Protestantism in some flavours can be close to indifferent, with churches merely seen as roofs
