Class is the concrete division of groups of Americans into varying levels of control and authority, and increasingly unequal reward for different kinds of work. But, again, the medium of this control, or how it works, is through cultural mediums in everyday life (school and work). Nowhere is this as clear as in public education, the very system designed to produce greater equality of opportunity, perhaps our most cherished American value.
