Luke says, Jesus’ enemies decided to bring him to Pilate, accusing him of three charges calculated to arouse the governor’s concern: “We found this man guilty of perverting our nation [apparently, of teaching in opposition to the designated religious leaders], forbidding us to pay tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Messiah, a king” (23:2).
