Eventually a middle way was decided. Belgium would not appeal for French or British assistance until her territory was physically violated, but the German ultimatum would meanwhile be rejected. The reply, described by Albertini as “the noblest document produced by the whole crisis,” ended with the resolution “to repel every infringement of [Belgium’s] rights by all the means at its power.”
