Having your existence completely erased has to qualify as a life-changing event, by anyone’s definition.

I most definitely was not ready to share the kiss. It wasn’t something I wanted to discuss in front of my grandmother, or for that matter, in front of someone who claimed to be the great-grandson of the guy who had kissed me. Things were weird enough without complicating matters further.

“Chrono-Historical Research Organization and Natural Observation Society,” Connor said through a mouthful of cookie. “Proving that future Americans are just as willing as their ancestors to contrive a title in order to get a good backronym.”

“You just experienced a different timeline than we did after the temporal disturbances you felt. To be precise, you aren’t the same Kate that I would have encountered if I’d started this project eighteen months ago, as I had planned.”

I was young and in love, and that rarely leads to wise decisions.”

I couldn’t care less which timeline is correct, because I know which one is right.”

“How is it that a grandmother from the twenty-fourth century sounds like she’s from a Charles Dickens novel?”

Just enjoy the relationship for what it is—for what it has to be. Otherwise, you’re going to end up much sadder than you need to be when it ends. Because it will have to end.”

Having read Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle in history class, I wasn’t too keen on any hot dog from 1890s Chicago, but I took a few bites, mostly of the bun so that Kiernan wouldn’t think I was too prissy to eat it.

The mistakes of one generation build upon the mistakes of the next and you get a society that no one really wanted.
