Though, for the life of him, he could not spot her cruelty.

“He said it would enchant her if she already had slight feelings for you. None of us expected the reverse to happen—”

“But as with many rules of the fairies, the opposite can take place too, and a fairy ought to be careful not to kiss a human if there are any romantic feelings—”

“I don’t know—whatever it is you’re trying to do with your soft kisses, and your warm stare, and your deep laugh.” She hugged her cold arms tighter to herself, and the Prince blinked in surprise. “Do those things make you feel something?” He stepped under the umbrella with her, escaping the rain. “Anything at all?”

His tone was sugary and tender, and for a moment, Kate thought about doing it.

But Cress did not need a good life. Cress just needed his mother.

“Be careful with him. He’s got a fairy crush on you,” was all she said as she left.

“Do you want to be saved by me, Human?” he asked. A tantalizing smile danced over his mouth. “Are you the sort of female who likes to be saved by a strong male?”

“No way. I think women are perfectly able to save themselves.”

“Cress,” she said sternly. “If you’re going to live under my roof, you need to follow my rules. Every one of the young people I’ve raised has had to abide by them. Being strong enough to chop my firewood doesn’t make you an exception.”

“Wait!” she screamed before the Sisterhood killed him. And that had been enough.

“That enchantment should have worn off a week ago.” Cress’s mouth tipped down at the corners. “What are you implying?” “You like her.”

“Because she’s innocent,” Mor said. “And she’s kind when she doesn’t need to be. I think you realized a while ago that Kate Kole is everything the opposite of what you hate.”

“Queensbane, Human. You like us, don’t you?” He poked her nose. “I think I like you, too.”

“I like your laugh. It’s harmless in both an irritating and infatuating way.”

“If I make you like me, Human, maybe my next enchanted kiss will stick.”

“It’s forbidden and cruel to enslave another living being. You should not have done it to my brothers, and I should not do it to you.”

think what Dranian has is called panic attacks to us humans. But I haven’t seen him have one yet.” Cress adjusted himself in his seat. “He hasn’t had one since he’s been here.”

“I’m relieved you were just protecting your fairy crush like any weak-minded, irrational, possessive male.”

“Dranian and I are risking our lives for you, too. You need to tell us what’s going on, or I’m going to trot back into that café and kiss our human right in front of you.”

“Don’t go outside alone again, Human.” His tone was dark. “Don’t go anywhere I can’t see you if you’re alone.”

There on the beach, he cried for the old woman. He cried for the loss he knew Kate Kole would feel. He cried for the mother who was taken away from him. And he cried for the simple life he’d never been allowed to have.

“Cry however you want to.” Cress’s low voice filled the kitchen. “There’s no need to hold it in because you’re worried what I’ll think, Human.”

“You like me,” she said. It wasn’t really a question, but she wanted to hear him say it either way. “Yes.”

“But I’m a repulsive human,” she quoted. “Yes.” “But you want me anyway?” “Yes.”

“Here’s our deal: You’ll stay until Christmas, and you’ll take all the kisses you want from me in that time,” she offered with a weird, bashful grin.

“Because you’d be driven to your death if I had to do that to you. You’d never catch your breath if I took all the kisses I wanted. I don’t think I’d ever want to stop. It’s a dangerous bargain, and you should know better, Kate Kole. Never make a bargain with a fairy.”

Her pretend boyfriend. Maybe not so pretend after all.

“Three more days until I lose you, Cress,” she said to all those in the café who weren’t listening.
