Duncan Hines (who was a real person before he was a cake mix) was an exuberant fan. So it’s hard to imagine that those melted bits of chocolate were anything but intentional. Several years after she first created her cookie, Wakefield would publish the recipe in a local Boston newspaper, and it would be featured on a radio show hosted by Betty Crocker (again, the person, not the cake mix).
