Our book club got its formal start with the mocha and one of the most casual questions two people can ask each other: “What are you reading?”
Still, one of the things I learned from Mom is this: Reading isn’t the opposite of doing; it’s the opposite of dying.
So it’s fair to say that Mom started the book club unwittingly and I joined it grudgingly.
But the question from Gilead, Mom said, was always the thing you needed to ask yourself: “What is the Lord asking of me in this moment, in this situation?”
We’re all in the end-of-our-life book club, whether we acknowledge it or not; each book we read may well be the last, each conversation the final one.
