“You’re pretty observant. You and Vinnie will for sure be the masterminds of our squad.” He brushes his golden hair back. “I’m seventeen too, and so are Vinnie and Tamaris. Alani and Lucina are newly eighteen and Rowan is just about to turn eighteen.”
“I do think it’s weird. We don’t trust Nora either, but we don’t know what to do. The medical examination is next week and we’re all a little nervous.”
“Tamaris has been here the longest, about five months. For the rest of us it’s been about one to three months.” Aervin raises his hand and stares at the back of it as if something’s there. “Our regiment used to be filled, you know.”
The words come out of his mouth slowly, filled with pain. “There used to be another here before you.” I raise a brow with concern. “What happened to them?”
“His name was Ash. He didn’t… he didn’t pass the exam.”
“Stop that,” he murmurs, bringing his face closer, burying his lips in the back of my neck before taking my skin between his teeth like a fucking animal. “I’m not doing anything,”
“Do Shadows just make everyone horny? Get off me,” I snap at him and try to remove his hand from my stomach, but all I do is push it lower. He lets his hand slide under the band of my pants, finding my heat and pulling me closer into him.
“No—not unless you’re Shadow mates. The chances are one in a million and I’ve never found you,” he whispers in my ear, rubbing his finger over my clit.
“Yeah okay—you’ve never found my Shadow, but you couldn’t give less of a shit about me and vice versa.”
Elias drags his tongue from the base of my neck to the sensitive skin behind my ear. “Come on, sweetheart—let me show you how much I care about you.”
“Fine, just make it quick.” I act uninterested and let a low sigh out. He flinches behind me and pulls his hand back, letting me go. “You’re no fun,”
“So you only want me if I’m resisting, huh?” He shoots me a glare and runs a hand through his beautiful white hair. “It’s called a kink, sweetheart.”
“You’re fighting a pointless war, you know. Even if I fucking despise you, I’ll still fuck you and let our Shadows have what they want.”
“Love is a myth,” he bites out and I raise a brow because we actually agree on this. I wonder who taught him this lesson. “You can say that again.” He considers me for a moment and then steps closer, whistling for Velis to come out again. “We don’t have to love each other to fuck, kid.”
“The Shadow mates have almost an impossible find ratio. The blood of the wielders calls to one another like magnets and the pull is irresistible. It’s not something you or I can escape.”
“Our blood yearns to merge—can’t you feel it? It’s taking all my fucking patience not to throw you to the fucking ground and devour you.”
Why am I feeling this way for her? Velis is making this really fucking hard. I don’t care about people. I’m the Assassin of Fernestia. The top graduate of Alkrose. I don’t bend to others… but her… Fuck, I don’t know if I can fight it.
“You can turn it off, you know…” She looks up at me on her own this time and those beautiful eyes hit me again. “You can turn it all off. All the pain, fear, and humanity you’re holding onto… just turn it off, sweetheart.”
Her eyes widen and she shakes her head. Good, at least she’s not completely gone.
“I will never turn it off and be like you,” she says in a low voice, then submerges herself in the water. Yes—you will.
“What do the Shadows do to us?” she asks, finally breaking our silence, and peeks up at me with those perfect emerald eyes. “Are we even human anymore?”
“Of course we are. The Shadows are like… partners with your soul. I don’t know their origin, it’s not exactly taught, but I’ve been with mine ever since I was a kid,”
thereof. She gasps at that. “They… Fernestia did this to you as a child?” Her eyes fill with sympathy and I hate it. I don’t need pity and I’m perfectly fucking fine. Practically ro...

“If you’re really working with Fernestia then why did you kill all of them? Weren’t they on your side?” she murmurs under her breath. Why did I kill them?
Because she’s my Shadow mate and they fucking hurt her. It set off something feral in me—the second her bones broke, I felt my sane side snap.

“Yes, you are mine, and Nova is the highest-ranked and rarest Shadow strain.”
“Is that what your Shadow is too?” She watches me like she’s trying to figure me out. I nod and she raises a brow. “How many are there? Why can’t I use my Shadow yet?”
“I’m the only one they’ve found so far. So with you, that makes two.”
“You can’t use your Shadow because you’ve yet to draw on it. You’re still rejecting its mergence.” She mulls that over and eventually nods. “Okay… well, thanks for saving me.”
She’s a drug in my veins and I can feel her power thrumming next to mine. She’s my equal in terms of power and that’s fucking unheard of.
“So why don’t you believe in love?” It’s the only thing she’s said that I connected with and I can’t stop thinking about who ruined her heart before I could.
“It’s not that I don’t believe in it. I just don’t think it’s worth the price,” she whispers.
“I was in love with my childhood best friend. We dated for two years, fucked in the forest every day for the last six months, and then he finally wanted to escape this world with me.”
Her eyes narrow with pain and I’m furrowing my brows right along with her because… well, I don’t know why. “Then he broke up with me the night we were going to run away and didn’t even look back.”
“No,” I mutter breathlessly, pissed on her behalf. You always look back. Th...

All I know is that I want to consume this woman and make her come so hard she forgets that asshole who ditched her.
“I’m on birth control, just so you know. I’m not having your fucking baby, psychopath.” I bark out a laugh and her eyes sparkle. “Yeah, I don’t want one. Again, the Shadow is the one you need to worry about. He’s all for pumping you full.”
“You’re… the bad guy, Elias… You don’t get the girl. Let’s just get some sleep.” She rolls off me and lies at my side. I follow her momentum and pin her to the ground. “No more teasing.”
“Who says the bad guy doesn’t get the girl?” I mumble as I lower my lips to her clit, stroking her sensitive nub with my tongue. “We have hearts too, you know.”
“You can’t just stop!” She looks like she’s about to hit me and I don’t think I’d mind. I smirk at her. “Well, what are you going to give me?”
I raise a brow, half expecting her to beg me to fuck her. But I almost gasp when she quickly sits up and literally takes my hand off my cock and fists it herself, putting her plump lips on the head and sucking me in.“Ohhhh fuuuck.”
“Fuck, sweetheart, you’re such a thirsty girl, aren’t you. See? Bad guys like me get bad girls like you.”
“I’m going to fucking ruin you,” he growls against my neck, sending chills up my spine. “Not if I ruin you first.”
“Finn!” Corvus hisses at me, his tone sharp. “Huh?” I flick my eyes up to him. My friends are staring at me, unblinking in the wind and snow. Kai’s hand is shaking violently and he takes a staggering step backward. “What? What’s wrong?”
Your hands,” Kai croaks, his eyes wild. My hands are glowing with the same light that Kallos’s did that awful day he burned those people, except my light is darker, a warm glow rather than his blinding light.
My hands are burning, almost like a fire from deep within me has finally surfaced. And it feels fucking good. The rage and fire wage a war in my soul and a dark thought creeps up through me, a shift under my skin and bones. Kill them.
A small voice silences all the pleas and rushing footsteps. It whispers to me in twisted tones. Show him pain.
My eyes blaze with fury and I tighten my hands on the man’s throat. The world stills around me in a parade of darkness and blood. Why am I killing him?
