I fell in love with her by moonlight.
“If you’re breathing, you’re alive. If you’re alive, there’s still hope. Don’t undo it on your own.”
He leans close and growls, “I’m going to force-feed you this coin in a second—” “Don’t threaten me with a good time, Lochlan.”
“No, I needed to do it. I’m glad you pushed me.” I roll my eyes. “I do wish I hadn’t thrown up on him.” “Are you kidding? That was my favorite part.”
Quint’s eyes are on the pages, and when he goes to turn another, his fingers brush mine. It’s a bare touch, brief and meaningless, but somehow it contains the force of a lightning strike.
But before the door falls closed, I notice Quint flip open the little book, just turning back the cover to that list of dates. At the bottom, he adds one more.
I seize the lapels of his jacket, and I press my mouth to his. If he’s surprised, it doesn’t show. I’m the one who’s surprised, because I was ready for there to be an edge to his response, a belligerence, but instead there’s a . . . a gentleness. A contentment, like this moment was a foregone conclusion.
“And then you cheapen it by calling it an act of pity, you insult me by treating me like a whore, and then you hurt me by calling it a mistake.”
“Do you have spirits?” Olive says, adding cheese to the bread. “Whiskey? Anything stronger? It might be better to cut out the infection and rinse it with that first.” Erik stares at her. “And then what? Set myself on fire?”
“I’ve known him since he was born.” Her face twists. “Rian and I share a father.”
He catches my hand and turns me back around. Without hesitation, he drops to one knee. There’s a ring in his hand, and a determined look in his eye. “Tessa Cade,” he says, “I’m ready now.”
