“I’m relieved,” I said. “I’ve been feeling so guilty.” “Your lucky day, I guess.” She raised her mug again as sunlight hit her eyes. * * *
“There had to be a good reason for all your lying. That’s what she kept telling me, telling herself.”
“Maybe she never wanted your help. Maybe she wanted someone else to save her. From you.”
