“I love you, Shannon like the river…”
“I think I need you for keeps…”
“Something’s happening to her, Gibs,” I choked out, feeling my heart hammer against my chest. “I can feel it in my bones.”
“Who’s hurting you, baby? I’ll fix it.” “It’s a secret.” “I won’t tell.” “My father.”
“I’m going to need him to take my case when I go down for murder.”
“Think he’ll represent me, too?” Gibsie asked. Shrugging, he added, “When you’re embarking on hell, it’s always good to have a buddy.”
“Did you know that Sean called Joey ‘Da-Da’ until he was two?” I interrupted sharply. My eyes were wide and full of unshed tears, my hands balled into fists and shaking at my sides. “Sean actually thought his brother was his daddy. I suppose it would be an easy mistake to make, you know, considering Joey sat up most nights doing his night feeds and changing his nappies when Mam was working nights or drowning in her depression. So, go ahead and tell Sean how irrelevant Joey is. Or better still, tell Ollie and Tadhg that every time Joey slept outside their bedroom door, for fear our father would

I wasn’t saying any of this to hurt him. I just needed him to get it.
I’d know that face anywhere.
“Can you save me?” “Do you need me to save you?” “Mm-hmm.”
“Took me forever to get back to you.”
Do you hear me? I’m here, I’m in, I care, and I’m not going the fuck away.”
“I care so fucking much I can hardly breathe.”
The usual fear and uncertainty that consumed me whenever I was in his presence was absent now. I felt stripped down to the bone and laid bare to this boy, and he was still here, still looking at me with the same eyes, still wanting more from me.
And I think I loved him more for what he didn’t say in that moment. He didn’t make promises he couldn’t keep. He didn’t offer more than he could give. He just stayed.
“I need to see everything. Show me everything. I need to see it all.” So I did. I showed him my arms and legs, my neck and thighs, and with every bruise and cut I revealed, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders.
baby?”
Stunned, I could do nothing but sag against him, giving him all of my weight and trusting him not to break me. It was a soft, innocent, almost feather-like peck on the lips, but it was everything in that moment, and it meant everything to me
“Oh no?” Johnny shot back, not masking the anger in his voice. “Well, I would prefer if you shoved your feelings up the highest part of your—”
“Get out of the room before I take your crutch and beat you with it.”
“Nice choice of words, Da,”
“Real fucking t...

“It’s the culchie in him.” I smirked at her comment. “I think it’s the lawyer in him, Ma.” Mam huffed again. “Well, had your father spent thirty-six hours on the flat of his back, trying to push
“I found this when I was washing your clothes from Dublin.” Walking back over to me, she handed me the paper. “You’re a sweet boy.” Smiling, she stroked my cheek with her hand before turning back for the door. “I’m proud of you,”
Shannon like the river, will you please be my friend? The friendship contract.
My brain barely had the chance to process that the figure I was seeing was Shannon before she lunged at me, wrapping her arms around my neck and causing me to stagger back a step. “Hi, Johnny,” she whispered, tumbling off the door step as she clung to me. “You came back.” “Hi, Shannon.” My crutches fell to the ground as I wrapped my arms around her body, holding her in place. “I promised I would,”
“You came back.”
I was enveloped in the warmth and security I felt like I had been chasing my whole life. “I promised I would.”
“I’m growing fond of your trouble.”
I want that, too. I want you to keep me.
“You love his sister, and I love his sister’s best friend,” Gibsie replied, scrubbing Joey down with a sponge. “It’s safe to say that pussy got us into this, Kav.”
“Fuck off, ya creepy bastard,”
“Normally, I would take offense at that,” Gibsie huffed. “But considering we’re in a shower together and your naked ass is pressed to my dick, I’m going to let that comment slide because I, too, find this situation slightly creepy.”
One thing I knew for certain was that I could never untangle myself from this girl. And what’s more, I didn’t want to.
“You know, if you’re looking for a stallion, you can always saddle me up,” Gibsie tossed back. “Shut up, Gerard!” “Shutting up, Claire-Bear.”
Johnny visibly relaxed. “You’ll stay?” I nodded slowly. “If you want me to?” “I want you here,” he told me, never taking his eyes off mine. “I want you to stay with me.” Oh god. My heart. These words. This boy.
“I’m going to buy you dinner, Shannon.” Closing the space between us, he lowered himself down on the couch and turned to face me. “Sometimes we’ll eat here and sometimes we’ll go out, but it’s going to be a regular occurrence, so don’t overthink it, okay?”
“I don’t need better,”
“Maybe not, but you deserve better,”
I feel safe with you.”
“Are you ever going to kiss me?”
Kissing her was different because there were feelings involved. Big, huge, terrifying fucking feelings that I knew she felt, too. It was different because it mattered—because we mattered to each other.
