Every now and then, Liam’s gaze lasered my way. He had resting bitch face at the best of times. Something was pissing him off, because right now, he had active murder face. I didn’t know why he was aiming it at me, though. Feeling daring, I raised an eyebrow at him. His fork halted halfway to his mouth. I narrowed my eyes. Yeah, I thought. I’m judging you. You cheating bastard. His nostrils flared. Oh, flare them all you want, Detective Chief Inspector Cheaty Pants Liam Nash.

He just kept coming. To anyone else he probably looked brisk and purposeful. To me? I had an advanced degree in annoying Liam Nash. No, a doctorate. I was a professor of pissing him off.

Liam was bundled up in a puffy yet manly North Face jacket. It was the kind of jacket that would keep you alive at the top of Ben Nevis in a blizzard just as well as it would keep you dry and toasty on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in the Cotswolds. Also, it was an eye-watering highlighter orange. So if he was in a blizzard at the top of Ben Nevis, Search and Rescue wouldn’t have any trouble spotting him from a helicopter. Or space.

His eyes were slightly wider than usual, locked on mine with fierce determination. As I watched, they slowly, slowly drifted down. He looked like he was fighting it, but he lost. The moment he did, he gave me a full body scan. It was quick, laser sharp, and over in a second.

He stared back at me. He looked determined and focused. I really wasn’t getting out of it this time, was I? Fine. I put my wrists together and stuck my arms out in front of me, ready to be cuffed. “I’ll come quietly,” I said. “I’ve already heard the noises you make, Jasper,” Liam said. “I highly doubt that.”

payed??? Is this an accepted British spelling? I'm pretty sure the NYT Spelling Bee wouldn't take it. Must look this up.

Okay. Payed is the past tense of pay, a nautical term, meaning to seal the deck or hull seams of a wooden ship to prevent leakage. The past tense of pay, the financial term is paid, NOT payed.

When Jasper got married to his ex-wife, Verity, I’d been devastated.
Dekaydreader
Oopsie? This story is Jasper's POV, and Jasper is all the way gay, not bi. Verity is Liam's ex. Where are the beta readers here? First payed when the correct word is paid (twice), and now she's done a sudden character swap. The story isn't even alternating POV - which would make this more confusing, I grant, but would increase the likelihood of an accidental character swap.
