“Okay, one? It can’t possibly fire up my obsession again because that fire is eternal and unwavering and will be burning bright when the sun devours Earth. And two, can we not call it an obsession? That makes it sound weird. He’s my soulmate.” Adam groaned.
It was cute and all that Adam was trying to protect me but I didn’t ask him to. I was used to being rejected. I was a writer. I was rejected professionally.
“Okay,” Liam said. “Let me recap. You’re offering to buy yourself a cock ring, which you will then wear, while letting me massage you by candlelight, with Enya playing in the background. Because you think I’m a virgin.” “Gay virgin. I’m pretty sure you’ve had a sex with a woman. Not assuming, though!”
This was amazing. I’d been trying to get his attention for years. Who knew all I had to do was take my shirt off and insult him to his face? It wasn’t the sophisticated seduction I thought a man like him would need, but pissing people off was very much within my area of expertise, and I was on a roll.
“Your eyes are ridiculous,” he said, reaching up and tracing a thumb along my cheekbone. “So big and round. You look like surprised Pikachu.” “You…you know who Pikachu is?” I stuttered. “You know about memes?” “Yes,” he said dryly. “I know about the internet. Now, focus. You’re supposed to be sitting on me.”
I managed to control myself and wait at least an hour before I texted him. While I wanted to text something along the lines of, Will you marry me? I settled for, That was fun! Let’s hang out some time!!!
I missed, most of all, the days when the thought of Liam wanting me back had been pure fantasy. Now that he was no longer married, now that I knew he was into men, that he was into me—at least physically—and yet I still wasn’t enough, it was a special kind of torture to run into him when I was out and about.
“I already am hurting you, aren’t I?” “I mean…yeah.” “I’ve pushed you away, and messed you around, blown hot and cold.”
“Well, you’re bossy.” “I am,” he said. “Which is a good thing, as you seem to enjoy being bossed around.” I scoffed, and convinced absolutely no one.
“Mostly I’m thinking that the reality of being with me definitely won’t be able to live up to years of erotic fan fiction. I’m going to give it a shot, obviously, but. Yeah.”
