Being heartbroken on a boat on the Caribbean Sea is infinitely more preferable to crying in between my kindergarten lessons in Pinecrest.
“Eden!” Phillip calls. “No umbrella!” “I can’t hear you!” I call back. He gets an umbrella.
“You’re using your teacher’s voice on me, aren’t you?” “Yes. Did it work?” “No. But it was impressive.” “Darn,” I say. “If only you were five years old.”
Of course, he’s the type to do laps. It makes perfect sense, with his semi-serial killer vibe and repressed sense of personality.
“Two of them fed each other chopped mango yesterday morning, and I almost committed double homicide with my grapefruit spoon.”
The ocean is large enough for us all.
It smells like him, like soap and warm skin, and man. I wonder why men’s scents are often described in overwrought sentences, like a dewy morning or musky pine, when that’s never what they smell like. They smell so much better.

Maybe that’s what happens on a vacation. You leave all your stuff behind, all the baggage, and for a short period of time, you can forge an entirely new identity. Keeping only the best parts of yourself and adding new facets, like trying on a costume for size.
I’m unsure if there’s much to say, or if daytime Eden can talk about what Eden of the night did.
That’s part of the game. You lose at times. But that doesn’t mean you stop playing. You go out again and again, and maybe next time, you win. And if you don’t, well… then, the game isn’t over, yet.”
