Love takes more than a couple days and a secret shotgun marriage to develop into something worth dying for.
I’ll admit Romeo and Juliet were passionate. But their passion was so intense, so destructive, it got them killed.
Will is twenty-one. He’s in his final semester at the local community college and is engaged to his high-school sweetheart. Cole is seventeen. He’s a senior in high school and a talented auto mechanic.
Zack and Benny are five and are in kindergarten. They’re twins and little monsters with potty mouths.
“Well, the best piece of advice I can give you ’bout my boys”—he began while unbuckling his seat belt—“is their barks are worse than their bites. Don’t let ’em scare you.”
They were splashing and goofing around—a shirtless bunch of gorgeous guys.
Why was I still here breathing when my family was gone, their lives cut short?
“Yeah, because you couldn’t see your face. You were all ‘Grrr,’ and it was adorable.”
Not knowing what’s going to happen every once in a while makes things all the more interesting.”
“But if you don’t know what’s going to happen,” I said, throwing up my hands in frustration, “then you won’t be prepared, and that’s when you make mistakes.” “Mistakes can be good things, though.”
“You can’t prepare for love. It’s not like taking your driver’s test or the SATs. It’s a gift. One that can happen at any moment.”
“Damn,” Nathan whistled, watching the Porsche disappear through the rearview mirror. “Did you see his face?”
“Stop,” Cole said, grabbing my hands. “I like the curls. It’s natural.”
“I want to go home,” I said softly. “All right,” he said, pushing back my hair. “I’ll take you.” But he couldn’t. Not really.
In their sleep, both boys kept moving closer to me, and when I finally drifted off, there was one arm wrapped around my stomach and one hand intertwined with mine.
“You know you’re adorable, right?” Then, he clamped his hand over his mouth as he realized what he’d said.
You couldn’t control everything, because it wasn’t all meant to be perfect. Sometimes things needed to be messy.
“I’ve been offered a spot in their company’s summer training camp. After the program, if things go well, I could be in New York productions this fall!”
“Loving you just crept up on me, and before I knew it, I was head over heels for you.”
“I’ve seen the way you look at me when you think I won’t notice. But the thing is, I’m always paying attention to you, Jackie. It’s like—you’re gravity and I’m just a little blip on your radar.”
“After the whole thing with Mary and Cole, I was so hurt. I think I knew deep down Cole didn’t know Mary dumped me, but it felt so good having a reason to be mad at him.” “Why would you want to be mad at your brother?” “I was jealous. People always compare us, but he’s so much better at everything than me.”
