“If you acted shy and quiet when eligible boys came to meet you, you’d be married by now.” “I refuse to behave like someone I am not.” She had this same conversation with Mama dozens of times. “I have a brain.”
“I don’t see what is so clever about getting married. Women take a terrible risk when they depend on a man to guarantee their future.”
“Only in England is a huge house with three levels called a cottage.”
“I do appreciate money and I am not ashamed to admit it. Money is a source of independence, especially for women.”
“It’s . . . We . . . We shouldn’t be down here alone.” “Definitely not.” He stepped closer. “All we ever do is quarrel.” “Because you are beyond annoying.” “And you are the most provoking woman I have ever met.” “The feeling is most definitely mutual,” she snapped. And yet she wanted nothing more than to feel his kiss again. His gaze dropped to her mouth. “This attraction between us is a curse.”
For the first time in her life, Raya let completely go and took exactly what she wanted.
She was too embarrassed by the way she’d clung to him like a drowning woman. How mortifying.
Why did such an obnoxious man have to be so physically attractive?
“Don’t ever doubt your potent effect on me. I want to fuck you so bad that it hurts. I cannot wait to be inside of you.”
“The list of why we should not marry is much longer than the reasons why we should.”
“I will always be opinionated. If you expect a quiet and biddable duchess, you will need to look elsewhere.”
I will never lose interest in my business pursuits.” “If that’s an attempt to turn me away, you’ve failed miserably.” His eyes gleamed. “If anything, your business acumen is a great turn-on and makes me want you even more. There’s nothing more exciting than bending a formidable woman to your will.” “Ha! I will never bend to you.” “I will settle for having you bend over for me.” His gaze smoldered. “And you will love it.”
“Families can be as much of a burden as they are a blessing. It takes a great deal of strength to withstand family pressure to conform.”
“I want to hear you say my name.” Was that all? “Strickland. There. Now you can leave.” “My name is Anthony.” The words were deep, sultry. “Say it,” he commanded. The hair on the back of her neck tingled. “Anthony.” “Beautiful.” His breath tickled her ear. She waited to feel his lips on her sensitive lobe. “I cannot wait to be inside you.”
“Don’t be thick blooded.” Auntie made a moue of distaste. “Nobody likes a girl with a big head.” “What you mean is that nobody likes a girl who knows her worth.”
“If a woman is smart, she lets the man think he has the last word, but in truth the woman will be running things.”
“Since you insist on behaving like a brat, I should take you over my knee and spank you.” She snatched her hand away. “I’d like to see you try.” Something sparked in his eyes. And it wasn’t anger or annoyance. It was hunger, interest, desire. The burning intensity of his gaze prompted Raya to fall back a step. “Don’t.” “Don’t what?” he murmured. “Bare that luscious ass of yours and have my way with it? And with you?” Need surged inside of her. “You are disgusting.” “And you can’t get enough, can you?”
“I know it must come as a shock, Guy, but ladies do grow and learn and develop interests beyond needlework and watercolors.”
Strick kissed her as he’d never kissed a woman before. With exquisite tenderness, pouring his unspoken feelings into the intimacy. It was the first kiss of his experience that wasn’t purely for physical gratification. It wasn’t the initial step in pursuit of the ultimate goal of screwing a woman. With Raya, he wanted to savor the moment, to wrap her in safety and security after she’d opened herself up to him.
“Is something the matter?” She finally looked him in the eye. “Whatever could be the matter?” His neck muscles tightened. He understood the female mind well enough to comprehend that he was supposed to know the answer. “If I knew, I wouldn’t be asking.”
“You are a goddess,” he whispered in her ear. “I cannot wait to fuck you.”
We are not rushing things. My evil plan is to give you so much pleasure that it ruins you for any other man.”
“You’re so fucking gorgeous.”
“In my heart, you are already my wife.”
“Have a care, Your Grace. It almost sounds as though you are saying I am perfect.” “You are perfectly imperfect.” “I’m not sure whether that’s a compliment or an insult.”
“As long as you understand that I will never be biddable.”
“Money, or the lack thereof, can make people behave in strange ways.”
“Women use clothing as armor. I chose this gown to boost my confidence, not to impress you.”
“The truth is never irrelevant. And that’s why you kept it from me.”
