“Ten minutes?” he asks, and I nod. “See, that’s where we differ. You only need ten minutes with me, but I needed the rest of my life with you.”
“You fucked me that night knowing it was going to be the last time,” he repeats. “That was on your terms. This is on mine.”
“Focus on my breathing,” I tell her. “You’re going to pass out if you don’t get enough oxygen in, and you don’t want to do that. Ignore everything else and just focus on me.”
Because the girl sitting over there is the same girl I fell out of my mind in love with. There’s a lot in my head that I need to work through, but that will never change. She’s always going to have that effect on me.
“That’s the thing. I wasn’t,” I confess. “I was just as stupidly in love with you as I was the day before.”
“There’s a part of me that still loves you,” I say honestly. “There’s always going to be a part of me that still loves you. But right now, there’s a part of me that wants to hate you, and I’m not sure which is stronger.”
“You think that’s going to stop them from finding you? Hayes tried switching where he was sleeping and had a dead animal hung on his door like a redneck Christmas wreath.”
She huffs. “Hayes didn’t go to college.” “And look how he turned out.” My jaw drops. “I’m right here!”
Then there’s the thin, gold choker around her neck that I would love to replace with my hand right about now.
“This is mine,” I growl, moving my hand slowly. “I don’t care if you’re here, or a thousand miles away pretending I don’t exist. It’s fucking mine.”
“You can and you will,” I growl. “Be a good girl for me and stay quiet. You know how.”
There’s just something so hot about a guy being possessive over you.
“Pretty sure you’re not allowed up there.” My jaw falls open in disbelief. Did she really just say that? “My brother owns half of this place, and the one who owns the other half was balls deep in my pussy last night. Pretty sure that means I can do whatever the fuck I please.”
“I guess,” he says hesitantly. “But I swear to God, if I start hearing moans up here, I will deafen myself with cocktail picks.”
And all I can do is hope that one day I’ll get him to believe me when I say I’m not going anywhere. If he wants me, I’m here to stay.
She shrugs. “I know, but I missed my best friend.” Ooh. Don’t let Mali hear her say that. The last thing we need is to give our stalker another death to hold over our heads.
“Okay, you really need to do something about the spinning porch, because I don’t remember it doing that.”
“I don’t hate you, baby,” I whisper. “I just hate that I wasn’t enough.”
Thankfully, I know what to expect with her and I shield myself before she’s able to kick me in the balls.
He bends down and kisses the top of her head, and I don’t miss the way her cheeks pink because of it.
“No,” he says. “I know what you’re about to say, and I don’t want to hear a word about it.” I open the passenger side of his Jeep and climb in. “That’s fine. As long as you don’t ask why Laiken is asleep in my bed.” For a second, it looks like he wants to change his mind, but he decides against it. “Deal. It’s too fucking early for this.”
Ugh, yep. Just rub it in. It’s fine. It’s not like I cry myself to sleep every night over it lately.
I snicker and look at Mali. “What is it about guys and thinking they know everything? I mean, are their dicks that small that they need to overcompensate so much?”
“You and I both know it’s not Mali she needs right now.”
“Don’t do that,” I say softly. “You did not do this. Some psycho did this.” She shakes her head. “But it all leads back to me.”
But more than anything, it scared the hell out of me, because her kiss is intoxicating, and I know too well what it’s like to be addicted to her. The withdrawal is a bitch.
But will I do it over and over again if it means keeping those I love safe? You’re damn right I will.
“I’m so proud of you,”
“I want to eat nothing but you for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” I tell her. “Fuck you for keeping this from me.”
“I don’t want to lose you,” she nearly whispers. It chips another piece right off my heart, but it’s fine. I’m used to it. I shrug dejectedly. “I didn’t want to lose you either.”
“If I don’t at least somewhat distract you, you’re going to stress yourself into a coronary.”
I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we want to put the events of today completely behind us. Except for the mind-blowing sex. That can stay.
“Easy, Magnum P.I. No one was here.” “Dude, did you not see the fucking mantel?” he presses. “It’s ripped halfway out of the goddamn wall.” She scrunches her nose as she looks at him. “Babe, trust me. You do not want to keep going on this topic.”
“I’m impressed, Wilder. I didn’t think you had it in you.” She turns to Cam. “You need to step up your game.” “Oh, I get it,” Cam whines as he stares up at the ceiling. “This is hell. I’m living in purgatory.”
“It could be worse,” she teases, messing with him some more. “I could tell you about how they fucked twice in the bar, too.” Cam rushes to press his fingers into his ears. “I repent, I repent, I repent!”
“I’d rather them be watching us than be anywhere around you.”
“I honestly didn’t think that my best friend would corrupt my little sister, so forgive me if I add her to my list regardless.” I turn to Hayes, smirking. “You hear that? You corrupted me.” His eyes roll, but I can see the hint of a smile there, hiding just beneath the surface.
But I need something to make me feel less like a dumpster fire.
All the sonnets and poems in the world pale in comparison to the way he makes me feel.
“I always fucking want to be called when it comes to her!”
If any of them think I’m letting her out of my damn sight, they can kiss my ass.
“Come here,” I say, pulling her against me while being careful not to hurt her. “We’ll figure it out. Okay? You’re safe. I promise.”
