My tongue was enamored with the taste of her. My ears were already addicted to her moans. My fingertips yearned for the feel of her warm, satiny skin. Even while I was still holding her. Everything in me craved everything about her and I was still greedy enough to want more.
He was all up in my damn face. I hated how much I loved that shit. “I’m not yours?” he repeated. “That’s what I said.” My attempt at brazenness fell flat when he moved in even closer. “Say that shit to my face then, Z. Since you mean it.” The slight flare of his nostrils coupled with the firm set of his jaw were problematic when I was trying to avoid feeling anything. But the flood he’d just unleashed between my legs didn’t get the memo.
She tried to get away with nodding, but I gripped her jaw. Applying the exact amount of pressure she always yielded to, I leaned down and let my next words fall directly into her ear. “I can’t hear you.” An agitated huff filled the space between us. “Open your mouth and speak, Zariah.” Seconds crawled by and she shifted from one foot to another. “You made yourself clear.” “I’m yours?” “Y-yes.” “You sure about that?” I asked. Just for clarity. I didn’t give a fuck about belonging to anyone else.
“But I also know that who you are is separate from all the amazing titles you have. As long as Gabe is okay, I’m happy. And if you’re ever not okay, I hope you know that you don’t have to hide that from me. I’ll do my best to show up for you…if you allow me to.”
This lovey-dovey shit was new to me. But Gabe was such an unexpected blessing I knew I’d be a fool to run from this.
Through it all, he’d always told me to forget the noise because those would be the same people watching me from the sidelines later. Years had passed and every word he’d spoken over my life had turned into my reality. I was young, gifted, and Black. An asset to every team I joined.
So many times he claimed I was his peace. But he was my sanctuary. My safe place. My solace.
