The spirit of rebellion can exist only in a society where a theoretical equality conceals great factual inequalities.

A character is never the author who created him. It is quite likely, however, that an author may be all his characters simultaneously.

When he says that all distinctions between workers and intellectuals must be effaced, what he really means is that it is possible not to be proletarian and know better than the proletariat what its interests are.

But from what are we escaping by means of the novel? From a reality we consider too overwhelming? Happy people read novels, too, and it is an established fact that extreme suffering takes away the taste for reading.
