This man smells like bourbon, spicy cloves, and honey. It reminds me of warming myself on a cold winter morning, and my heart starts to race in a way it never has before.
people make the mistake of thinking Caleb is insecure because he’s so quiet. Garrett never has a problem speaking his mind, Ethan wouldn’t know how to keep a thought to himself if you paid him, and I’m pretty damn opinionated myself. But Caleb’s silence isn’t a lack of confidence. Far from it. He just knows the value of waiting for just the right thing to say.
“I’m going to make sure my Omega has three meals a day,” Dante counters. “How many times did you forget breakfast or skip lunch working at the shelter?” He’s got a point. “You know, a girl could get used to this.” “Good. That’s the plan.” He smiles possessively at me over the stove.
“I don’t want to interrupt your work…” “Work can wait,” Dante promises, his voice a low rumble against my throat. “Trust us. We know when we can take breaks. Besides, you’re our priority now. What’s the point of our success if we can’t use it to take care of our Omega?”
“Are you… cuddling me?” I ask, as I snuggle deeper into his embrace. He chuckles. “Yes. How am I doing? I’ve never actually cuddled before.” The admission from this gruff, stoic Alpha makes me grin, and I press a kiss to the warm skin of his chest. “You’re doing great.”
“What a strong Omega,” he purrs. “My strong Omega. You were so brave. It’s okay. I’ve got you. I’ll protect you. I’ll rip his damn throat out if he tries anything, I don’t care who’s watching or where we are. You were so brave. You’re safe. I’ll keep you safe.”
People are irreplaceable.”
If I give them my heart, I’ll be giving them the power to hurt me. But I’ll also be giving them the chance to love me in a way I’ve never been loved before in my life. And as scary as it is, I think I want to take that risk.
“You feel what you do to me?” he whispers roughly. “But I’ve barely done anything.” “You exist. That’s enough.”
As I’m complimented, I realize that I expected people to be hostile toward me. I was waiting, somewhere in the back of my mind, for people to decide that I wasn’t good enough.
“Dogs have pedigrees,” Ava says quietly. “People are just people.”
“People act like technology is safer,” Ethan tells me when all is said and done. “But actually, if you really want things to not be recoverable or traceable, it’s better to do things the old-fashioned way.”
Some people like having money because it allows them to spoil themselves. Other people like money because it means they can be lazy. But some men, like Marcus, like it because of what it can buy for them, the leverage it allows them to have. They can rewrite the rules in their favor all the time.
“Doing this even though you’re scared is what makes you brave.”
It’s kind of sad, actually. Marcus is an Alpha, looked at with respect by society. He comes from money and owns a company. He’s handsome, and he knows how to be charming. He should be set for life. And yet there’s something inside him that’s so insecure that he has to abuse and manipulate people in order to feel happy. He has to amass even more power.
