“Father always said that the price of privilege is responsibility.”
They were very expensive and I’d used them sparingly, saving them for a special occasion or an indulgence. As I looked at them, I wished I’d used them every day.
He stepped back, holding the flap open. “Simus, here’s someone new to listen to your grousing.”
“Doesn’t tell Marcus that the warprize doesn’t have the brains that the elements gave a gosling.”
“All right?” “Perfect.” “Only the sky is perfect.”
“All knew of his plans for this place, and followed in that understanding, but there’s miles between knowing and doing.”
Eat now. Rafe and Prest will be here soon, and the food does no good to the plate.”
Keir lifted his chin, a gleam of humor in his eyes. “We will review battles and tell lies about our bravery. Do you wish to attend?”
“Simus is telling his tall tales, and those city-dwellers are believing every word. I needs get back and poke holes in the bucket he carries his conceit in.”
I AWOKE TO A WARM EMBRACE, A FROWNING COUNTENANCE, and Keir’s voice in my ear. “You are not to leave this bed today.” The day deteriorated from there.
He kissed me even as he began to move, and there was joy and pleasure and transcendent light exploding within me and around us and through the very essence of our bonded souls.
I laughed. “Keir, I am all sticky.” He growled, eyes gleaming in the light. “I am going to get you stickier.”
it takes more courage to be waiting than to be in the thick of things.
Eln entered. With gentle, understanding hands, he pulled me away from the window, and seated me on the bed. He checked me over quietly, with no comment. I closed my puffy eyes and sat silently, my head aching something fierce. Finally, Eln put one finger under my chin and lifted my head. I opened my eyes to see his concerned face, before a strange look flashed over his features. Eln slapped me.
You want something, you work for it, not sulk in your room weeping like a spoiled child.
In all honor, either balance the needs of your people and your desires, or accept your responsibilities.”
Days? Had it only been days? Does the heart count days, or even hours?
“What brings Your Majesty to my humble clinic?” “My majesty needs to talk to you. To talk to someone I can trust.”
Keir had been right. The best part of being a queen and a warprize is getting exactly what you want.
“Warprize, they will sing of this for a thousand years.”
“Warprize, please, take my boots and cloak. You’re cold, and your feet are bleeding.” In point of fact, they burned like flames. “No.” I kept walking. Muttering something, Tant raised his hands to the sky as he walked beside me. I wasn’t sure if it was a prayer or curse, but I distinctly heard “Why me?” I was tired, my feet hurt, and I wasn’t going to listen to his whining on top of it all.
