Sections like this mark Melville's work as absolutely tremendous, an artistic triumph - after pages and pages of Ahab's fanatical quest we meet his polar opposite, a man who was similarly mauled by Moby-Dick and whose response was diametric to Ahab's. This is the sort of thing undergrads could write pages upon pages about!
