The whole system of catacombs in Rome (named after one particular complex of tunnels beside the Appian Way in a sunken valley, In catacumbas, knowledge of which survived when all the others were forgotten) eventually extended over sixty-eight square miles and house an estimated 875,000 burials made between the second and ninth centuries.
