Aethelwold, a courtier of King Aethelstan, who had become a monk and from 963 was bishop in Edgar’s royal capital of Winchester, was a scholar and dynamic teacher who inspired a series of decaying monasteries to adopt the Benedictine Rule as their standard of life, having himself translated that Rule from Latin into Old English.
