Divine delighted in constructing a picture of the Roman Empire’s collapse which would have been familiar to pre-Christian Jewish writers in the apocalyptic tradition. He described Rome in a frequent Jewish shorthand for tyrannical power, ‘Babylon’. Significantly, John the Divine is the only New Testament writer uninhibitedly and without qualification to use the provocative title of ‘king’ for Christ.
