Yet in the same passage Paul said something more positive: that both husband and wife have mutually conceded each other power over each other’s bodies. This gives a positive motive for Christian counter-cultural opposition to divorce, but it is also striking in its affirmation of mutuality in marriage. That message has struggled to be heard through most of Christian history.28
