In 1631, the franchise for the colony’s assembly was limited to Church members. Still it was compulsory for everyone to go to their parish church (known in New England simply as a ‘meeting house’), and the Massachusetts government tried to stop people settling beyond a certain distance from the meeting houses so that they could be properly supervised.
