I only recently discovered that literary maps are a thing. A map does something to a story: it insists the world was real before the characters arrived, that Owl had always lived in that tree, that the Yellow Brick Road was laid down long before Dorothy ever landed on it. They make you feel that if you folded them just right, you could step inside.

These are three of my favorite literary maps since
