I read that a couple of years ago, and really enjoyed it, that's the first book of his I read. It's kind of wierd the Maugham was self conscious and a self proclaimed 'second rate writer.' 'Of Human Bondage' is in my top ten, if you haven't read it, you should pick it up. I should pick up 'A painted Veil.'
About taking awhile to read authors, I'm currently reading 'A Moveable Feast' and think I should of read it years ago. Hemmingway describes Paris and being a struggling writer. It's awesome. That's the good thing about books and literature, it's never ending. So much out there.
