Results Without Authority: Controlling a Project When the Team Doesn't Report to You
by
"The best book for growing people leadership skills and mindsets targeting the specific role of the project manager. This book deals directly with the challenge program managers face - that you have to manage people, even executives, without any authority. The books dives into three key levers for leading people: process, influence, and metrics. "

Principles: Life and Work
by
"This book teaches you how to approach new, unknown situations by abstracting the situation enough to be able to devise a principle based conceptual solution. As a project and program manager you're often managing people from many departments or even companies and navigating difficult organizational and personal challenges. There are many issues that come up that can either be dealt with in a way that conforms with the processes and structure of the company or in a way that is disruptive or lacks any coherence. The principles will teach you to be disciplined and coherent in your decision making approach so you can transverse the challenges in managing projects easily and quickly. "

Lessons My Brothers Taught Me: How to Transform Your Personal Qualities Into A Successful Business
by
"This book has a chapter dedicated to program management practices and how/why they are important even within a small business. I recommend reading this chapter and the chapter on Culture in particular because this provides a great background on the impact that effective (or ineffective) project and program manager can have on the organization. It will inspire you to see your role as a key change maker and understand how the role of project manager connects with the culture of the organization. You'll also learn about organizational culture that can be inhibiting your work as a project manager and hopefully learn some lessons on how to help overcome problems such as siloes, fear-based leadership, and lack of process adherence."
