"The main character is a Congolese man who was captured by a Portuguese slaver, where he is raped, beaten, and sold in Cuba to work in the sugar cane fields & be fought in human bloodsport. From there a kindhearted Spaniard man from New Orleans buys him his freedom & fosters him. Later that man is executed before his eyes. Hardened by life & seeking revenge the negro assassin Reginald Beauregard Valencia systematically stalks those men one by one; slaying them with a LaMat Revolver & 16th Century Spanish Rapier. During the American Civil War he along with his small black-sheep militia (Heaven's Seven) will fight both the natural & supernatural. This is the first of the "God Walks The Dark Hills" series. It goes from 1835-1864.

Basically, the main character's story
falls somewhere between the combined violence of "Afro Samurai" + "Django Unchained" + "The Hills Have Eyes" + "I Spit On Your Grave."

War is painted as cruel and uncaring. People's motives are questionable. Lots of historically accurate stuff in this. Also, lots of sci-fi darkness. "
