The main character, Celaena Sardothian, came out of the slave mines doing a year of time and went right into a competition where she faced doubt, mistrust and sexism galore but found love, friendship and ultimately eventually gained her freedom. She's a freaking assassin too. I wouldn't get on her bad side if I were you"

"(Slight spoilers) When I read this book for the first time, Scarlet became my role model. She's headstrong, sassy, and not afraid to shoot her gun to protect those she loves. She goes on a trip across France to find her grandmother with one of the people that took her away in the first place. When she finds out the lie/secret she doesn't hate the other character but instead forgives them and asks for their help to escape."
