A Tale for the Time Being

"I first read this book during a particularly difficult period of my adolescence (but isn't growing up always turbulent lol) and found it both heartbreaking and comforting that one of the main narratives in this story follows that of a young girl who is often utterly alone and without place in the world, having crossed both the boundaries of American and Japanese culture and not really finding her place in either. Her cheery, almost blasé attitude about even the more seedy aspects of her environment colors the whole text with humor and adroit observations that make her moments of vulnerability all the more aching when she allows the reader to witness her open sorrow and confusion. This book was just love at first everything."

"Noir with a female person of color as the protagonist/main sleuth is very rare and done very well in Follow Her Home. As a result, the book can address such a culturally sensitive topic as the fetishization of East Asian women in urban LA with a great understanding and sensitivity of the matter while unraveling an interesting plot of murky crime more commonly associated with the genre."
