A.J. You're tempting me with all of these! :)

Eleanor Oh dear - sorry! Just my quick picks from a list of about 100 books, being ones that I have read and found memorable.

Nancy I still have so many Virago books in various spots around the house, in their green covers and the black ones of the original US editions. Every time I weed out books, I can't quite make myself get rid of them.

Miss M @Nancy,
Me too! I have a separate shelf dedicated for my Viragos and Persephones--the Viragos especially were such an adventure to find in the pre-Internet days. Hard to think of letting go...

Eleanor Come to think of it, I have never been able to donate any to the charity shop either!

Nancy Even as I prefer to read electronically, I wouldn't want to live in a bookless house (fewer would be better, though; despite my best efforts, I don't seem to make much headway). I don't have so many Persephones as Viragos; in part because the thrill was less by the time they came out and in part because of the price. There are still a few Persephones I'd love to read, but they're cost prohibitive.

Eleanor We have books in every room in the house but the bathrooms. I am always amazed at the way so many people don't seem to own books on programmes like "Grand Designs". However beautiful the house may be, it seems a bit sterile without books.

message 8: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Absolutely.

Of course I wince a bit to have to acknowledge that "sterile" is the last word that could be applied to my own house!

Eleanor :-)

Nor ours!
