Diaspora: Hard Science-Fiction Role-Playing with Fate
by
"The Fate system is a good one, and this is my favorite iteration of it. The cluster generation system is also one of the more interesting setting generators for a sci-fi game that I've ever seen."

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Rulebook
by
"Pretty much the pinnacle of traditional FRPG design as far as I'm concerned. Just enough crunch to keep tactical combat interesting while still being easy to remember. Mechanics that make every fight deadly while still allowing players to take heroic risks."

King Arthur Pendragon (Pendragon 5th Edition)
by
"There still aren't many games where you roleplay generations of characters in the same family. You do in this one. Every gamer should at least try to play the Great Pendragon Campaign with this at some point.
This would probably be higher ranked on the list but votes are currently split between two editions. I don't actually have this one, but it's the higher ranked of the two listed, so I put my vote on this one." |

Apocalypse World
by
"Simple engine that has inspired a host of other games, and solidifies a lot of concepts for running good games into the system itself.

Just be aware that there are some mature themes here." See Review |

Amber Diceless Role-Playing: Diceless Role-Playing System
by
"Indie before indie existed. The diceless resolution mechanic was a real eye-opener when it came out, and probably still would be for anyone who has only played traditional games.
Lords of Gossamer & Shadow may replace this, as I understand it's more or less the same game without the Amber IP." |

Star Wars: Edge of the Empire Roleplaying Game Beta
by
"Refines the unique dice mechanics introduced in Warhammer FRP 3rd Edition and makes them work.
The best attempt yet to capture the feel of Star Wars, but if you don't like Star Wars, you could probably skip it." |

The Star Wars Roleplaying Game
by
"A classic game that is still fun to play. Technically, the Ghostbusters RPG was the true innovator, and this was simply a refinement of that system, but this one is Star Wars."

Dogs in the Vineyard

"Solidified a lot of good concepts for running and playing RPGs. Less essential now that the designer has further refined those concepts in Apocalypse World, but still a good game."

Dungeon World
by
"My favorite game based on the Apocalypse World engine which is a system that every GM should try running at some point. Really forces you to think about concepts important to running a good game."
