"This book will make you cry, become angry, and think deeply about how the American justice system works, or does not work for some people. In the case of Stevenson's work, in particular for poor Blacks in the south. In the end, one should come away with a deeper appreciation for justice and mercy."

"I believe this is one, if the best sing volume survey of the history of African Americans. Dr. Franklin chronicles the full scope of Blacks in America; therefore, it must be understood that he does not go into extreme detail on some topics, but the does accomplish his goal, which I believe is to provide a coherent understanding of Blacks in America.
