The Fault in Our Stars
by
"The girls in my class absolutely devoured this book. The character are wonderful and the story seems to really resonate with middle schoolers. The language can be somewhat complicated and I know that some of the story went over my kids' heads but they understood enough to fall in love with this book. I had to beg some of my reluctant readers to put it down!"

Shiloh (Shiloh, #1)
by
"Some of my kids read this in elementary school but the ones that missed it really enjoy the story. It's short but doesn't look "babyish". Both my girls and boys can get into this one."

Among the Hidden (Shadow Children, #1)
by
"I'm not exactly sure why some of my kids are so obsessed with this series- there really is not much action in the first few books and I don't personally find Luke to be a particularly compelling or interesting character. That said, some of my students really get into the dystopian world Haddix creates and are totally hooked. This is a nice way for some of my slower or lower readers to get into the dystopian craze. The story and writing is very easy to understand and each book is short."

Schooled
by
"This is fun an easy read, each short chapter changes narrator. The story moves quickly and the theme of tolerance comes through without being preachy and with a lot of humor."

"I haven't read this one yet but a couple of my girls absolutely loved it. Others found it a little slow so your mileage may vary."

Sideways Stories from Wayside School (Wayside School, #1)
by
"This book is little immature for most of guys but some still enjoy it. Each chapter is complete in itself and only a few pages long so it's nice to read during short SSR time."

Where the Red Fern Grows

"Most of mine read this in 6th grade English. It's a little tricky for them to read independently but they really loved reading it as a class. "
