Prozac Nation

"Wurtzel came to my school last year, so I felt it a wise idea to pick up her book. Not only is she a terrible speaker (by far the WORST at our symposium), her book manages to take a very sensational issue and make it the most boring thing I've ever read. The entire book reads like a transcipt from a 12:30 AM phonecall from a valley girl. Like, totally boooooooooooring. If you want to read a good example of this genre, try Girl Interrupted!"

"This is another AP Literature read. Oh goodness, how I HATED the book. However, because I hated the book so much, I found the ending quite satisfying (everyone dies, basically)"

"Summary: Alice Sebold gets raped. She's sad, but boy is she lucky to be alive. It basically goes on like that for 300 pages or so. Absolutely awful. "

excuse me, please don't take this personally, but the Diary of Ann Frank is an amazing book. And I think that not a single young person in this world has lived though the horrors and screams of watching people die including you own family and other people you love. Please show so more respect to those of us who are brave and caring as Anne Frank.

I'm not saying anything about what she went through. The Holocaust was a terrible event. Genocide is terrible, but it's not over, so there are hundreds of children who have and who will experience the horrors that Anne experienced. If you notice, I did not criticize the girl, or people who suffered through horrible events. What I did say is that it is the diary of a young girl, and it reads like a diary of a young girl. Just because the subject matter is tragic and moving and heartbreaking doesn't make me like the book. And just because the book is about a human being who experienced a horrible event DOES NOT MAKE A BOOK A MASTERPIECE. When all is said and done, this book is a diary. It was written by a little girl. It is not particularly well written, and it was never intended to be read by an audience. If not for her tragic end and her unfortunate situation, no one would have ever heard of her, and nobody would have read her book.
I have no issue with people who like the book, who want to put it on the best books of all time, but I just don't feel the same. And I think it's wrong to be dishonest about my opinion of the book because she died, or because the holocaust was terrible, or because she was a jew. So, to make a long rant short, I will be leaving it on my list of worst books of all time.
