Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
by
"Genevieve Whitman from this book. The outpouring of love she shows for her kids and also for Vivi, how she is always advocating for love and support and kindness when she sees other parents mistreating their children, and how she goes and rescues Vivi from the convent and stands up to the nuns. She is a tidal wave of love and unequivocally has her kids' backs."

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, #1)
by
"Precious Ramotswe from this series is a favorite of mine. While she grieves the loss of her own biological child, all children she encounters are hers, in the way that she loves them and folds them into her circle of care. Whether feeding and embracing local urchins to pursuing kidnapped children and standing up to organized crime rings, she is courageous, measured and kind, even when inside she is afraid. A wonderful nurturer and example."

Unbearable Girl
by
"This is my book, and I am unabashedly in love with George and Martin Burns, Laurie's gay dads. As bad as Dianna's dad is in this book, that's how good George and Martin are, and I wrote this book specifically to give them voices. They are fun loving and silly, advocates for justice and children, and have a quiet strength that ripples through everyone around them. They are one part Atticus Finch, one part Genevieve Whitman and 220 parts love."

Beach Music
by
"Jack McCall in this novel is a great dad. He also parents with humor and love, has a zero tolerance policy for anyone being unkind or threatening to his daughter, while managing to stay kind and laid back at the same time. He lets his daughter be herself, makes decisions in her best interest even when uncomfortable for him, and creates a wonderful and warm family atmosphere even as a single dad. Love him!"

I Sing the Body Electric! & Other Stories
by
"The title story from this collection, I Sing the Body Electric, has always been one of my favorite Bradbury works, and he is one of my favorite writers. His command of language is amazing and intimate, and he uses it in this story to completely capture the mysteries and voice of childhood. "Dad" in this story, is wonderful. He's forward thinking, reasonable and sweet natured, recognizes when he needs help and that he is flawed, and comes up with a creative solution to give his kids even more love than he is making on his own. A great addition to this list!"

Nightwoods
by
"Luce in this novel is a reluctant mother, having inherited her late sister's children, but has amazing and very human instincts. She recognizes the kids as being thinking, feeling creatures with their own needs, gives them space to stretch into their new family and approach her as needed, recognizes that they aren't right for more traditional parenting traditions and adapts to them in communication and in her own routine. That her own narrative about being their parent is so full of uncertainty and curiosity only makes her stronger and more real, and her love and organic development as a mother are spot-on and just right for her kids.
